12-6-05 - Off To Bath
Up early today for a run out to Bath, and this was a very cool trip in more way than one, see if you can see why from our pictures… We first needed to locate a Laundromat as we both did not pack enough clothes, but could not find one on the way. We found one on the way out of Bath late today, but Stephani couldn’t face laundry while I sat in the pub ;-)
The city of Bath was founded by the Romans around 400 A.D. and has Great Britain’s one and only hot spring. It is most famous for its baths, architectural innovations and also for being the first city to send a letter with the original black stamp, the Penny Black. It’s Gary’s second visit to Bath. The drive was a bit grueling, over two hours, but well worth it, down the M25, then down the M4 Vrooom!! Parking was a joke, it was the biggest and most full lot I have ever seen, we literally crawled around it, going down rows the wrong way for a long time, then miraculously found a space. We then had lunch in a pub, “Toad In The Hole” was the order of the day. It consists of Yorkshire Pudding, which is a bread like pastry that has raised sides to make a little dish, imagine a more firm Croissant type pastry, it is filled with three English bangers (sausages) and brown gravy. It is served with Chips (fries) and peas (peas). The service was mediocre, we waited over a half hour for this meal, and they had no apologies for the lateness or curt bar staff. Can’t win em all.
After lunch we took the “FREE” mayor’s walking tour of Bath. It was over two hours, lots of walking, and some fantastic stories about the history of the city, too much for us to go into here. The architecture was the main theme as you’ll see from the photos below.
We’re going to try and make another day trip tomorrow to Leeds Castle in Kent, then we are stopping in for tea with Mark T and Jill T (two blogger friends who live in Crawley), the four of us plan on going to see London band The Vibrants down in Worthing. Gary has been communicating with Sam, the guitar player for a while. Check them out, they are great.

Thursday our rental car goes back, we’re hoping the floor carpet has dried out in time, it was still a little mushy today. The weather is so cold it is hard to dry it out. It sopped up two big brawny rolls overnight. Then we will be reliant on trains etc. till we come home.

Today was a bit warmer Max... We have stopped shivering... Now we are reliant on rail/bus - no more driving. Thank God.
